Attractions
Wing has a fascinating
history. As a Saxon hilltop fort it repelled invaders
and in the 1960s, together with other nearby villages,
fought and won against government plans for a third
London Airport on its doorstep.
You can see pictures of Wing's impressive church here
and visit the village's own web site for more
information - www.wingvillage.co.uk.
Nearby Ascott
House, bought by the de Rothschild family in
1876, and unfortunately not open to the public
during December, is situated on the Leighton Road
out of Wing. The de Rothschild family built
Mentmore Towers - just a few miles across the valley.
More
information here. If the weather is clear,
a drive from Wing to Mentmore and back will allow you to
appreciate the fine views from both locations.
Leighton
Buzzard is a small country market town, still
possessing much of its historic charm. As well as
the usual high street chains you will fine some small
shops here and for those that like charity shopping,
it's worth a visit. The Grand Union Canal runs
between Leighton Buzzard and Linslade and this waterway has
an excellent towpath if you fancy a walk. Judging
by the calendar of events for last year, 2nd December
may well be the date for pre-Christmas festivities in
the town.
For those who fancy serious shopping, then central Milton
Keynes is just a few miles distant, but be
prepared for the Christmas rush to be well in swing with
car parking a serious problem, unless you park and ride. |
